This is a great film and one of Billy Chong’s best films IMO.  And it has Robert Tai as the action director.  This seems to fly under a lot a people’s radar probably because the only version I know of this is a sorry, low quality, full-screen English dub.  I think this would be a good candidate for a blu-ray release, but you may have to pull out all the stops to get enough sales to recover the costs.  I mean dual audio and hopefully 1080p and great quality.  Removable subs couldn’t hurt either – even though I am fine with burned in subs if your source already has them burned in.

It may be risky, but I would be in the support of a blu-ray project.

I don't have a BR player, so DVD gets the vote from me. I think that's the problem you may be up against, a lot of fans still haven't made made the switch from DVD to BR yet. But I'm 100% sure that this project will be a big success no mater if it's DVD or BR, or maybe even both?

we are thinking about doing this one in blu-ray but it is more expencive so before we invest so much $ into it we want to know a few things.

1. who is interested in the film

2. who will only buy dvd

3. who will buy blu-ray if availible

this will be our first telecine project, if it goes good we will do more. we cannot do it if we cannot sustain the rest of our projects so we must calculate the interest properly before investing any further money than we have invested to get the print itself. as always we are trying to be transparent with everyone through the process as we always try to be.

thanks for the input guys. the print is just beautiful its on LPP(no fade) film stock, the colors are bright and have not faded, there is no lines or scratches on the film, no missing frames no dirt i have to say it looks like it was just struck from a negeative. its in cantonese with embedded subs, i'm sure we can ad remastered subs and the english dub no problem.  i found a studio that can transfer it HD, they will scan each frame independant directly from the film, use  DaVinci Resolve color correction and they use the apple prores quicktime codec. that handles colors better than any other codec. so the project has great potential to be excellent quality. its all about the execution and we are not leaving any details out. if anyone has any tech advice please don't hesitate to forward it. i'm not just dropping off the reels and leaving it up to them i will supervise the color correction myself.

i watched the print projected and it was like watching a celestial DVD i was in awe the whole time. 2 other people that viewed it with me were also in awe of the clarity and color of the print.

in my mind the question is wide open and we should not close our minds to possibilites. its ok to discuss things it costs us nothing to talk about it.

Well if it's mastered as a bluray, the bluray itself can easily be converted to DVD with many free programs available on the internet. So maybe it can possibly be offered as either a BR or a DVD, depending on which one the buyer orders.

i understand what you mean. from a tech standpoint i'm thinking the studio would do the better encoding. we could shrink Blu-ray down but we want to stay away from that. if we spend the $ to master the film. we would not want to then sell the re encoded video to fans. we understand many companies would not even bother to attempt this let alone a bunch of fans doing custom discs. we are not doing these discs for profits we are doing them because it seems no one else will do them how we want to see them. doing them alone we have no chance but everyone working hand in hand there is a glimmer of hope and thats enough to fathom the thought. many digital theaters are screening films using the Blu-ray format and its has its detractors but from a preservation standpoint the higher quality transfer has higher value. of course offering both formats its better but we are trying to save $$$ where we can yet give the best possible quality so we need to take all things into concideration before choosing a direction. we are trying to do it in a open and transparent way.

i will leave you with this quote

"The important thing is not being afraid to take a chance.
Remember, the greatest failure is to not try.
Once you find something you love to do, be the best at doing it."

we are looking at all options

I'm not quite fond of posting on forums (getting older and more impatient, i guess, lol), but when I've seen this topic, I had to make my registration, vote and give my opinion. Fist Full of Talons is a movie I'd pretty much die for in order to watch a good quality print. As for DVD or BR, I'd be more than happy with a DVD version, specially if this option might help to reduce the final costs.

To that point many people brought up the "cost" argument. So maybe the next step would be to evaluate the difference in price that a DVD vs BR could cost, maybe the difference is not that much?

I'm interested no matter what, but if bluray is doable I'd prefer that over a dvd.

If it is to be a DVD (just specualting), would it be better to do a DVD9 instead of a DVD5? Less compression and better quality is possible.

This is Indeed one of the Best of Billy Chong's films. It is definitely worth a Blu-ray Release, yet again long road ahead. Have to make all the loop holes vanish & create a sustainable cost.
I'm all in for the Blu-ray project. Hopes you guys get the support you need, good luck.

Of course I would want a bluray! So few films of this type are available in HD.

I would be very interested in a blu-ray version as it would be 'special' to me as pretty much the only non-shaw movie of the era in HD, while DVD is just one of many available..

To produce a good looking DVD the transfer would have to be done in HD and then downscaled, so you might as well put out a blu ray as well as a DVD. I think your best bet for keeping costs down would be to get a HD telecine to a hard drive done and then encode and downscale it yourself for Blu and DVD.

welcome to the forum alir77  thank you for your input, i share the same thinking as you as far as this films being one of the only non-shaws (outside of bruce and jackie)that has a chance to Blu-Ray. the fact that fans can make it happen would be even more special. if we can pull this off more bonifide classics are slated for possible telecines.

the fans choices between Blu-Ray and DVD are dead even that not much of a surprise but let's brake the tie and find a winner.

according to the poll there is a lot of support for blu-ray so its looking like BR is going to be the winner of the poll. we are about half way for the fundraising. we want to telecine it first before we announce any release date. i think we got a lot of usefull info from all the fans. thank you everyone for your help.

there is one technical aspect we are not too sure on. and thats how to add the english dub to the blu-ray. i don't know anyone except the big companies that have done this. but we are trying to do all our homework first to cover all our bases. if we know exactly the process we can prepare the track ahead of time so when we are at the studio it will be a simple load/insert.
please akuma if you have anyideas with that we need your input
