I think it's now no secret that we are currently working on a full uncut/remastered AND English subtitled version of CANTON VIPER.

So far I've been busy reworking the image quality. It was a real nightmare as I needed to remaster a total of 64 scenes one by one to get the best colors for each one of them. The Korean VHS was quite beaten up, not in terms of tape defects but just the original recording.

All I can tell you is that it looks better than any copies around and it's in its glorious widescreen 2:35!!!

Here are screencaps.

By the way just to mention, here on those screenshots the aspect ratio is not 100% accurate, as you can see some of the faces look a little bit stretched. The screencaps were taken from my workprint. The final version will be a bit wider than 2:35

It should actually look more like this:

I was checking this nice upload of Canton Viper on Youtube.

http://youtu.be/2sdvbB2M3o0

The uploader wrote that the copy is from a VHS. However, there is only the Korean VHS that exist and we have it.
I find it very strange that this copy on Youtube is badly cropped on the left. Also, some scenes are so dark that we
can't see what's going on or who's fighting who.

The copy seems to be like the FLK print (same aspect ratio) but sharper and with a better white balance.

New developments on Canton Viper my friends.

A new remaster with a better picture quality and better contrast is almost complete and by that I mean 98% complete, only a few adjustments here and there are needed. I will post screenshots soon.

Also, another GREAT news is that I finally received the COMPLETE translated script for the film from our translator.
We now need to check it and later make the timing. So it's really a relief to get this script and we are all excited about it
at Houndslowteam.

At last, the final-final-re-re-remaster is done.

You guys don't have any idea how perfect we want this title to be. ;)
Now the aspect ratio and colors are as best as they can. After fixing up almost all the scenes one by one
the amount of work on this is going to pay off.

Soon I will upload some screenshots of what that final print looks like!

Oyé Oyé!

I know that most of you have been waiting for this for now almost a year and it's taking shape more and more, but the Canton Viper project
is probably the movie in which we put the MOST: love, time, effort and money in. We are calling it the release of the year since it's going to come in it's full widescreen aspect ratio and fully subbed for the first time. We are also keeping some of the bonus secret for the release date but you guys will be blown away! ;)

So here are a bunch of screenshots I took from the FINAL remaster showing you the quality of the DVD you will get. I think this is the 5th time I try to fix it up and I think this is the best it can be... After remastering alone over 70 scenes separately one by one and applying a countless number of filters to bring out the best out of our source. I think here I managed to do some miracles.

So the next step for us is to finish the timing of the subs. and pretty soon we will be able to give a release date for this long lost Hwang Jang-Lee masterpiece.

Meanwhile, enjoy these:

That's certainly a hard source to remaster and you've done wonders with that capture! I tried my hand at the original quality you've posted and I could not get it to look that good easily! The original tape looks pretty bad, and I can't believe it's a 1st gen original...

it took several trys at the print and over time new methods were tried to get the end result. we learned a lot durring the process. it wasn't just a filter slapped on it and thrown out there. when we do a project we try to get the very best out of all material we have at our disposal. that takes time in some cases but it is always worth the wait

I'm very impressed with your work here. Could you tell me what hardware and software was involved with the transfer and editing?

Before I was using VirtualDub a lot since there were so many nice and useful filters. But now that I do scene by scene restoration I do not use that anymore.

today i made arrangements for some very special bonus features once we get the footage we can better answer the question of the release date. there has been a lot of new activity in the past month that will come to light as soon as we get it in our hands on the footage. i hope to hear back very soon about it. it will be very hard for us to top this disc if everything goes according to plan. its possible to release the barebones version now but we are working on some features that are sure to please even the hardest to please and the most cynical of people there has been quite a bit of personal investment from all of our members to make this final version of the forthcoming disc. it would have been impossible to do without everyone on the team working together.
